One violation of the "primary bag" rule is the tent, which my wife will have in her bag. I may find a way to get it in my pack, but it's already at capacity. Sleeping bag, clothes, food and water take up my main compartment, so I'm really out of space.

ReplyDeleteFirst two items to jettison are camp pillow and sleeping pad.
ReplyDeleteClothes bag covered with towel makes a great pillow. Sleeping pad is totally a luxury.
A mesh hammock might be a better option (space and weight). It can also be used as a net for stream fishing, or a net bag for dunking items in water (cleaning or cooling).
Where is the waterproof poncho? Might want to replace rain pants with a poncho - sure your legs may get a little bit wet, but a poncho also makes for an improvised tent (especially if you have two that button together) or lean-to. You can also use it as a ground cloth. You want to keep water off of your face/head (visibility) and off of your torso (preserve body core temp) - your legs are less important - but your feet are vital.
Here in CA you could also go with a poncho liner, which is a type of quilted nylon blanket instead of a sleeping bag (you could even go with two poncho liners for less weight and space than a sleeping bag) - unless you are planning to go somewhere (BOL?) where there is snow.
Consider a pair of waterproof socks or boot liners (oversocks), and you want multiple pairs of socks, each in their own ziplock bag. The dry socks should be in an easy to reach location (outer pocket of backpack). You will also want foot powder of some kind (baby powder will also work), to help your feet stay dry and comfortable.
Speaking of ziplocks, you will have each roll of TP in its own ziplock, right? TP is one of the most important "luxury" items you can have.
Jar of peanut butter is an important food item. Not very heavy or bulky, but full of protein and calories.
Hard candy (a snack sized ziplock should be fine for a day or two) keeps your mouth moist on a long hike, and keeps you from drinking your water too fast. The sugar can also give you a temporary energy boost.
Some sort of Camelback system is really good for hydrating on the move. Canteen and cup are also useful (or Sierra cup).
The stove is a luxury, as are all the food heating devices. MRE packets in your armpits get warm pretty quickly when you are hiking. So you really need hot food and coffee on a two or three day emergency evac? Maybe it should go with the tent.
Consider a small solar panel that hangs from your pack - they are great for recharging cell phones or other small electronics. I know you have a hand crank radio, but consider this a backup charging system.
Shaving gear? During a bug out?
Shampoo works fine as soap, soap doesn't work great as shampoo. If you only carry one, take the shampoo.
Camp lantern is probably going to get ditched for weight/space as well. Maybe it should go with the tent.
Do you have spare batteries for your battery operated things? Can they be charged (items or batteries) from your radio/solar panel?
If you have knee problems, as I do, an adjustable polypro knee brace is a good addition to consider.
Waterproof poncho is there but needs to be added to the list. It's an inexpensive one the size of my palm. I've also got a Swiss army poncho that weighs about 3 pounds that sits in my car. I would likely grab that only if I expected rain.
DeleteI'll consider dropping the pad. I would keep it in a colder climate, but I probably don't need it. The advantage is it weighs almost nothing and takes up a "slot" I can't use for other things.
The Esbit stove is a redundancy thing. It's very small and besides the packed fuel can take twigs or whatever to cook. Along with a fishing and trapping kit (real hail marry items for me), the stove is what gets used when the packed food runs out.
DeleteThe coffee is definitely a luxury. They're essentially packets that come with the MRE's, which I've broken down. They weigh next to nothing, although extra heaters do weigh more. It's not a lot but the ounces add up.
I don't have any spare batteries yet. I'll be adding those last, but I will add them. A lot of items have rechargeable batteries with USB charging: phone, GPS, GMRS radios. I would like to add a solar charger, but I'm out of space. A lot of my current wish list items are attempts to replace bulkier items.
Something like this - http://www.explosivepowersports.com/bushnell-bear-grylls-solarwrap-mini-portable-charging-system-pp1010bg/
DeleteVery compact when rolled, hangs on the outside of your pack.
One or more Carabiners/D-rings might be useful for items like this.
Here's my Bag's inventory. My bag is a hybrid of sorts as it pulls double duty if I get stuck at a disaster scene at work.

ITEMS ON THE TO-DO LIST:
ReplyDeleteI still have about a softball size open space inside my pack. Some ideas I might add:
Some sort of sealed eye protection - swim goggles maybe
N95 mask
A couple more water pouches
Extra ammo
More Kleenex / TP
Small fishing gear setup - line, hooks, lures etc - but this may start tipping the pack towards survival vs GHB, still the space needed is minimal
Bleach, if I could find an absolutely leakproof container
I keep my bag in a vehicle and am afraid it will get smash-and-grabbed. This is an item I highly recommend:

I bought mine used on eBay for 30 bucks.
Oh, I'm adding that to my list.
